<The Forest> 系列是我2016-2018年间完成的专题,使用火棉胶湿版摄影术以及11×14英寸大画幅座机在原始森林现场创作完成。作品的呈现使用版画印于英国WATERFORD 638g/㎡手工水彩纸上,具有丰富的细节与层次。手工着墨修版,每件都略有不同,全系共20幅。这次展览是作品首次完整地展出,作品的本质,是手工获取并绘涂的虚构超现实空间。

<The Forest>, was a spacial series completed during 2016-2018, completed create in the original forest scene, using WET PLATE COLLODION PEOCESS and 11×14-inch large-format camera.  The works are printed on the UK WATERFORD 638g/㎡ handmade watercolor paper with rich details and layers.   Hand-retouching, with a total of 20 pieces, each one is slightly different.  This is the first complete exhibition of this series. The essence of the work is a fictional surreal space that acquired and painted by hand.

对自然的向往,对平凡事物的探索,一切说来是那么简单,又那么的不简单。

回归自然,有与大自然连接的能力。是21世纪人类十大奢侈品之一。(华盛顿邮报。Back to nature: ability of connection with nature.)

艺术创作的过程需要连贯的思路,连续的工作和敏锐的直觉。这几方面对于绘画出身的我而言,最重要的点莫过于“现场感受”。换言之,我仍然日复一日在户外写生。陪伴我的是阳光、雨水、风、云,它们有时带给我很大的帮助,有时也会给我不小的麻烦。这种纯手工的技艺使我有更大的发挥空间,具有独特的影调和无颗粒的丰富细节。在平均5分钟的曝光时间里,在15秒钟的显影时间里,充满着各种感性与理性的交织。不论是对画面内容及细节的苛究,还是环境偶发性与湿版技术的局限,都导致创作进度慢到常人无法想象的地步。

这需要相当的自持力。

摄影语言是多层面的,视觉符号与延伸意义是大家常常关注的。但是对于绘画人来讲,从无到有构思一件作品,以及巡山渡水去寻求素材,不论是画面中表象与抽象,还是创作过程与材料观感,都是语言的一部分。在这当中,我更注重的是感受与执行的过程,去探索内心那一种本来艺术应该有的朴实与冲动。

The process of artistic creation requires coherent ideas, continuous work and keen intuition. In terms of these aspects, the most important point for me is“live feeling”.  In other words, I still sketch outdoors day by day. I was accompanied by sunshine, rain, wind, and clouds. They sometimes bring me a lot of help, and sometimes they give me a lot of trouble.  This purely manual technique gives me more space to play, with unique tones and rich details.  In an average 5 minutes exposure times; in the 15 seconds development times, filled and mixture with various emotional and rational.  Whether the rigor of the content and details of the picture, or the limitations of the environment and WET PLATE technology, Whether it is the rigor of the content and details of the picture, or the limitations of environmental sporadic and wet-end technology, the progress of the creation is too slow that you can’t imagine. 

This requires considerable self-sustainability.

The photographic language is multi-faceted, people often concern on the visual symbols and extended meaning. However, for a painter, to conceive a work from scratch and to seek materials through the mountains and rivers, it is a part of the photographic language whether the appearance and abstraction in the picture, or the creative process and material perception.  Among them, I pay more attention to the process of feeling and execution, to explore the simplicity and impulsion that the original art should have.

不大喜欢对作品的过多阐述,也不喜欢对作品的过多解读。觉得,人不完美,但自然是完美的。

人法地、地法天、天法道、道法自然——《道德经》老子 公元前5世纪

历时两年半,行车约三万公里,这20幅作品得来不易。却走过国内大部分山林,但凡有人的地方,就几乎无法有自然。

I don’t like too much elaboration nor too much interpretation of the work.  I feel that people are not perfect, but nature are. 

It took two and a half years to drive about 30,000 kilometers. These 20 works are hard to come by.  I have walked through most of the country’s forests, because there is almost no nature if there are people.

我回顾自己的作品才发现,这也许是在用最不适合外拍的摄影技术,创作这工艺最不适合作品的题材。整个创作的过程就是在给自己找麻烦。但是这过程是自然发生的,非刻意所为。火棉胶湿版外拍使我犹如在户外写生一般,感性地、即时的、高质量的在现场调整并绘制出我要的空间关系和画面关系。我也称之为画,Tintype本身得到的就是超现实的光线与镜像的画面,是非纪实的。

从主宰和控制自然界的意图,转变为一种合作和非暴力的态度。这是一种生物学的态度……

为了一幅画面,深入丛林选取素材。常常在某个位置要持续工作一个礼拜的时间,当人的状态从旁观到体验,从深入到融入。生命的起源、生命的形态、生命的价值、生命的理想、生命的意义从不同层面被一一展现。围绕着“道”这一核心,深刻揭示了宇宙生命发生发展和人类社会发展变化的真谛。

I look back on my work and found that, perhaps I’m using the most unsuitable photography technique for outdoor shooting, to creating a theme that craft is least suitable for works. The whole process of creation seems like looking for trouble.   But this process just naturally occur, not deliberate.  Outdoor shooting makes me feel like I am sketching, emotionally, instantaneously, and high quality adjust and draw the spatial relationship and picture relationship I want then and there.  I also call it painting.  The TINTYPE itself is a surreal light and mirror image, which is non-documentary. 

I went to deep jungle to select the material for a picture.  It often took me a week in a certain location, from onlookers to experiences, from in-depth to integration.  The origin of life, the form of life, the value of life, the ideal of life, and the meaning of life are revealed from different levels. Around the core of “Tao”, it profoundly reveals the true meaning of the development of the universe and the development of human society.

火棉胶湿版是一种古老而纯粹的摄影术,它的发明和成熟的时间也正是绘画最为繁荣的那段日子。这种工艺需要在拍摄现场布置暗房,涂布感光板、曝光、显影、定影,全手工地制作出影像。Tintype只记录下冷色光与紫外线,加上镜像的画面它们几乎除去了摄影的纪实属性。我选择将这影像用版画的方式印制出来,再加以水墨调整,补上细微之处的不足。
很高兴在这个过程中,并不是我选择了湿版创作,而是湿版选择了我。

The Wet Plate Collodion process is an ancient and pure photography. Its invention and maturity time is also the most prosperous day of painting.  This process requires the darkroom to be placed at the shooting site, coated with a photographic plate, exposed, developed, and fixed, and the image is created by hand.  TINTYPE only records cool light and ultraviolet light, plus mirrored images that almost remove the documentary properties of photography.  I chose to print this image and then adjust the ink to make up for the deficiencies.

I am very happy that in this process, I did not choose the Wet Plate Collodion, but the Wet Plate Collodion chose me.

创作的过程对于艺术家而言,如同生命中呼吸一样自然。当然你需要时不时跑跑步,加快一下心跳。也可以做做瑜伽,这对身心健康都是有好处的。艺术创作对于艺术家来说是一辈子的事,反映的是他的真实与真情。当然偶尔有些善意的谎言或者是骂骂人也是无伤大雅的。
但是,爱要用事实,而不是用理由来证明。

The process of creation is as natural to the artist as breathing in life.  Of course, you need to run sometimes to speed up your heartbeat. You can also do yoga, which is good for both physical and mental health.  Artistic creation is a lifelong thing for an artist, reflecting his truth and true feelings.  Occasionally some kind of lie or swearing is also innocuous. 

However, love uses facts, not proofs.
